Activity Book

The Buzzword partners designed this kit to inspire your family to keep learning together. We chose activities that build on your child’s natural curiosity, encouraging a growing vocabulary and a deeper engagement with books.

First, read with your child through Dress Up Day by Blanca Gomez. Then, go through the different activities and ideas together, taking time to explain the meaning of the words and connecting them to your child’s real-life experiences.

Costume Book List

Personalized recommendations from Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh (CLP)!

Pants, shirt, jacket, underwear…we all wear them. Some have pockets, others fun textures; they might even make you look like a dinosaur! Our everyday clothes express who we are, but it can be fun to put on a costume and pretend to be someone or something else. Check out these books about what we choose to wear, and why clothes and COSTUMES can matter.

Featured Activity

Scarf Costume Play

Use a scarf from your house to become different animals.

Materials: scarf

Step 1: Find a scarf at home.

Step 2: Now choose your own adventure below. Who or what will you become first?

Wings—Flap your scarf up and down and pretend you’re a butterfly or a bird.

Lion’s Mane—Drape your scarf around your head and roar like a mighty lion.

Superhero Cape—Tuck your scarf into the back of your shirt with the help of your caregiver. Now fly through the air with your cape.

Master Chef—Tuck the scarf into the front of your shirt like a chef’s kerchief. What fancy dish are you going to make?

Explorer—Wear your scarf as a bandana. Now you are on an adventure. What are you going to discover?

Artist—Scarf around the neck like a painter. What beautiful work of art you are going to make?

Extension Activity: Think of other “costumes” you can create with your scarf and the adventures that follow.
