The Buzzword partners designed this kit to inspire your family to keep learning together. We chose activities that build on your child’s natural curiosity, encouraging a growing vocabulary and a deeper engagement with books.
First, read with your child through The Way Champs Play written by Naomi Osaka. Then, go through the different activities and ideas together, taking time to explain the meaning of the words and connecting them to your child’s real-life experiences.

Ready, set, read! This booklist celebrates the values of good sportsmanship through stories of teamwork, perseverance, and respect. Whether facing challenges or cheering on friends, the characters in these books show that how you play the game is just as important as winning. PLAY is essential in supporting learning early literacy skills. Encourage your child to pretend and create stories on their own. As you read together, talk about taking turns, being a kind teammate, and cheering for friends. These conversations help preschoolers build social skills, expand their vocabulary, and make connections between the stories and everyday activities.

Play and Draw Outside
We can have fun outside with this activity that brings art and PLAY together. Create your own double drawing.
Materials: Two pieces of different colored sidewalk chalk
Step 1: Read The Way Champs Play with an adult. Can you name any sports that children in the book are playing?
Step 2: Go outside with your caregiver and find a blank space on the sidewalk.
Step 3: Pick up a piece of chalk in each of your hands and practice drawing a circle on the sidewalk with both hands at the same time.
Can you draw both halves of a heart? What about a square?
Extension Activity: After you’ve drawn multiple shapes, jump from one shape to another to PLAY hopscotch.
