Buzzword Partners to Hold Literacy Workshops, Movie Screenings, and More

Buzzword partners with a number of cultural and arts institutions in the Pittsburgh region. Below are a list of upcoming activities from several of these partners.

Family Centers of Allegheny County

East Liberty Family Center will host a kids craft event from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28. The center’s craft activities typically involve simple materials and techniques that allow children to use their hands and make something fun and decorative, while utilizing fine motor skills, imagination, and artistic expression.

An early literacy workshop will be held at the Carnegie Library of Homestead, located at 510 E. 10th Ave. in Munhall, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31. Natasha Tarpley’s book “The Me I Choose to Be” will be the focus of the discussion.

Dancing to My Own Beat, which runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, is a social skills group for children with Autism. The event will be held at the Wilkinsburg Family Center on Wallace Avenue.

Carnegie Science Center

The Carnegie Science Center will screen “A Silent Voice” - a Japanese animated film that tackles the topic of bullying - at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 23. The screening will take place at the science center’s Rangos Giant Cinema.

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

Students entering grades one through four will be able to take part in a week of artistic endeavor and hands-on learning in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. From July 7 to 11, students will utilize science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) through various activities, field trips, and collaborative projects. ACH Clear Pathways

The Hill District Arts Festival will return from July 26 to 27. The festival, which runs both days from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., includes live entertainment, local food trucks, a variety of vendors, and hands-on art activities for children. This year’s festival will include a live performance by hip hop legends Doug E. Fresh and EPMD. More information can be found on ACH Clear Pathways’ website.

Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy

This year’s Allegheny Parks Summer Concert Series includes a variety of musicians and performing artists at the South Park Amphitheater and the Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater. Among those performing this year include Herman’s Hermits, Smash Mouth, Nick Lowe, KT Tunstall, the Tamburitzans, The Skyliners, and The Vindys.

Naturalist educator Nyjah Cephas and guest birder Eric Hall will lead Black Birders Week: Sunday Bird Outing in Frick Park from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 25. The event is designed for beginner birders and those interested in birds. Registration is open.
